Watch Sturgill Simpson’s ‘Breakers Roar’ Music Video

Sturgill Simpson is keeping the nautical theme of A Sailor’s Guide To Earth going strong with the release of the music video for the quiet and brooding ballad “Breakers Roar.”

Released last week, the video was directed and illustrated by Matt Mauhrin, whose visual work includes projects for Bonnie Raitt, Sting, and REM. The dark, vaguely morbid style looks remarkably familiar to the recently-released videos for “Brace For Impact (Live A Little),” the first single from Sailor’s Guide and “In Bloom,” Simpson’s cover of the Nirvana classic. At present, it’s already racked up more than 70,000 views on YouTube.

The video features black and white shots of a pensive, subdued Simpson juxtaposed with a sort of underwater graveyard for broken hearts. The song is ultimately a solid bit of advice for Simpson’s young son, whom the album is dedicated to, evidenced in lyrics like these: “Oh, and everything is not what it seems / This life is but a dream / Shatter illusions that hold your spirit down / Open up your heart and you'll find love all around”

“Breakers Roar” is the second single from A Sailor’s Guide To Earth, Simpson’s third full-length solo effort. In its first week, the album sold more than 55,000 units and debuted at #1 on the Billboard Country Albums, Current Albums and Digital Albums charts. Last week, Simpson kicked off a largely sold-out world tour in Austin, Texas, that will stop in Kentucky, Tennessee, Michigan and the U.K. throughout the summer.
