Scientists at Cornell University are saying that injecting white blood cells with a special protein transforms them into "super natural killer cells" that can wipe out cancer.

Experts say the breakthrough could stop the disease from spreading through lymph nodes to other organs in the body.

These super natural killer cells induce a state known as apoptosis, where the cancer cells self-destruct and disintegrate.

In the study, the bio-medical engineers killed the cancerous tumor within days by injecting liposomes armed with TRAIL (tumor necrosis factor related apoptosis-inducing ligand).

We want to see lymph node metastasis become a thing of the past." - Cornell University

While this is certainly encouraging news on the front of fighting cancer, many tests still remain. But it looks like a great breakthrough.

In our research, we use nanoparticles and attach them to natural killer cells, to create what we call "super natural killer cells." These completely eliminate lymph node metastasaes in mice." - Professor Michael King, Cornell University
