ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) — The number of storage units in Aberdeen has grown over the past decade. So much so, that the city now has one unit for every 15 or so residents.

Brown County Director of Equalization Mary Worlie tells the American News Aberdeen is home to about 1,800 storage units. The city has more than 27,300 residents.

Chris Gross runs the West 12 storage facility. He estimates that about 500 units have gone up in the past seven years. He says his facility doesn't have a waiting list anymore, but it's still at full capacity.

Gross says he believes the lockers have become popular for various reasons including city codes that don't allow people to leave stuff out in their yards.

The newspaper reports people store from vehicles to seasonal items.
