PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The state Department of Environment and Natural Resources has scheduled its first of several meetings to help develop a state plan to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Power Plan.

The federal Clean Power Plan requires states to submit a plan outlining how it plans on complying with EPA's plan or to request an extension by September 6th, 2016.

The department says the federal Clean Power Plan aims to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emitted from the Big Stone coal-fired power plant near Big Stone City. It also includes the Deer Creek Station natural gas-fired combined cycle turbine near White.

The first meeting will be held February 23rd at the Milbank Visitor Center in Milbank.
