LESTERVILLE, S.D. (AP) — Residents of Lesterville can once again use water from the local system for washing and bathing, but they still can't drink it.

The state has partially lifted a water ban that was put in place Monday after high levels of a potentially dangerous chemical were found in the water.

The chemical tetrachloroethylene is used mainly in the textile and dry cleaning industries, and in high amounts over time it can lead to liver problems and can increase people's cancer risk. It's not known how it got in the water.

Mayor Muriel Pratt says officials have put up a portable showering facility and are delivering bottled water to residents.

About 130 people live in the southeastern community.
