State Gets Grant to Train Dislocated Workers

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation has received a $418,000 federal grant to help train long-term dislocated workers for high-demand occupations.

State Labor Secretary Pam Roberts says the department refers people to training that will lead to jobs that pay well.

Long-term dislocated workers are defined as those out of work for at least 27 weeks.

The department seeks to train people for occupations where there is a high demand for workers. Those include specialty trades, mechanics, sales representatives, truck drivers, first line supervisors, welders, accountants, teachers, information technology workers and engineers.

Eligible dislocated workers may be placed in on-the-job training, classroom training programs or other approaches that connect them with employers.
