HURON, S.D. (AP) — All veterans and active military personnel can get into the South Dakota State Fair for free on Thursday.

A program saluting veterans will be held at 10:30 a.m. CDT Thursday on the fairgrounds in Huron.

The keynote speaker will be state Veterans Affairs Secretary Larry D. Zimmerman. He is the first secretary of the department, which was created when a previous agency was split into two so that one department handles veterans affairs and the other oversees the South Dakota National Guard.

Zimmerman is preparing a new vision and mission statement for the department, which serves more than 70,000 South Dakota veterans.
