It can be pretty frightening for a child to be in the hospital, but the folks at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital have figured out a fun way to lift the kids' spirits.

The world-famous treatment and research facility has a very special program called Doggy Daze, which offers patients and their families some calming time with specially-trained therapy dogs who are teamed with volunteer handlers. The kids get to take their minds off their treatment for an hour while they play with and pet the dogs under the supervision of a Child Life specialist.

As you can see in the video above, the dogs range from tiny little pooches to giant Great Pyrs, and everything in between. The kids also get cards that they get to keep.

"I like the cards very much because they say the dog's name and have a picture of them," says Kaden, a 9-year-old receiving treatment for early T-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia. "And I keep them. I have a few of them now. I don't have a favorite dog because I like all of the dogs."

Doggy Daze began back in 2002 with just three teams, and has grown to 15 teams. St. Jude is always looking for more volunteers for the program, which requires a certification process. For more information about how you can volunteer for Doggy Daze, visit St. Jude's website.

St. Jude's mission is that no family has to pay while their child is undergoing treatment for life-threatening illness. On Thursday and Friday (March 5-6), Taste of Country joins 16 Townsquare Media-owned stations in an effort to raise money and awareness for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
