With Tuesday's opening of public schools in Sioux Falls, Police Officer Greg Slaten says speeding is much too common in school zones.

"That's the biggest thing we see in the first couple of weeks. People are not used to the kids being there. They get into a routine over the summer to and from work. People just need to remember that these kids are out."

Slaven says congestion around school zones is a concern for the youngsters.

"People are not parking. They actually pull over by the side of the road
and let their kids off in the middle of the street. That's very dangerous. Depending on the school you are at traffic is trying to get around you. Drivers are in a hurry. Letting your kid off in the middle of the street is illegal and it's very unsafe."

As is texting and driving!

"We look for it. If we see it, we stop and write a ticket. We will probably see a lot of it especially the first couple of weeks. People are not used to be being in the school areas. They are not used to the kids being in the school areas. If we see this happening, it will be addressed with them."

While we rode along with Slaven on Tuesday morning five drivers were cited for speeding in a school zone in less than 30 minutes. Tickets can easily cost a motorist up to and over $125!
