SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) — Man's best friend might not be welcome at all during the weekend of a big fundraiser next summer at Spearfish City Park.

The has city approved the first reading of an ordinance to ban pets even before the start of Festival in the Park, which raises money for the Matthews Opera House and Arts Center. It's held at the end of July every year.

The Black Hills Pioneer reports an ordinance prohibiting pets has been in place for several years. The new law would start the ban sooner, so pets would not be allowed in around the park for all three days of the event, even if their owners aren't going to the festival.

A second reading and hearing is scheduled for Dec. 30.
