I bet you didn't know that 61,000 South Dakota students receive free or reduced-price meals when school is in session. A staggering, but real number to be sure.

So what happens when school is not in session? The need is still there, kids still get hungry, right?

That's where the Summer Food Service Program comes in. The program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture is made up of many different organizations across South Dakota that serve free meals to children and adolescents during the summer months.

Individuals age 18 and younger can get a free meal at participating locations, which include nonprofits, schools, libraries and local governments.

The summer food service program is here to help feed kiddos throughout the summer months when school is not in session. Nearly 429,000 meals were served last year through the program, according to education officials.

Individuals that want to find the various facilities serving meals and learn more about the summer food service program can by using this online tool.
