Traffic volumes are expected to be high during the 75th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and the state is planning to ease up on the old gas pedal as a result.

Due to the expected increase in traffic over the next few weeks, speed limits will be reduced on select South Dakota highways starting today, Friday, July 24.

If you plan to travel Interstate 90 the speed limit will be reduced from 75 mph to 65 mph from west of the Deadwood Avenue Exit 55 in Rapid City to east of the Lazelle Street Exit 30 in Sturgis.

The speed limit on Highway 34 will be reduced from 45 mph to 35 mph from Blanche Street in Sturgis to 3.8 miles east of Sturgis.

And those traveling Highway 79, look for the speed limit to be reduced from 65 mph to 45 mph from the junction of Highway 34 to 1.5 miles north.

Transportation Secretary Darin Bergquist says,“Reducing the speed limit in these areas is intended to keep motorists safe, reduce rear-end collisions and keep traffic moving in and around Sturgis. Patience will be key for everyone to enjoy their time at the 75th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.”

The revised speed limits for the Rally will remain in effect through at least August 10, some may continue until August 15 depending on traffic volumes.
