Don't look now, but South Dakota is about to get new license plates again in 2017.

If you're one of the people who hates the current too dark, too dirty, George Washington is facing the wrong way design, don't get too excited just yet. You won't be getting new plates. Unless you're in need of a commercial, dealer or trailer plate.

The South Dakota Motor Vehicle division will be reissuing those plates starting January 1, 2017.

Drivers will be able to purchase new commercial and trailer plates through their local county treasurer office and electronically at all 10 self-service terminals throughout the state. The new plates can also be obtained from the motor vehicle customer portal at MySDCars.sd.gov.
