PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The Board of Regents says the president of South Dakota State University is stepping down to teach in the university's economics department.

The board said Monday that President David Chicoine will leave the post around July 2016 or sooner if a replacement is found.

Chicoine oversaw the school's transition to Division I athletics. The board says the largest fundraising campaign for education in state history was completed during his tenure.

Regents President Randy Schaefer says the school has "flourished" under Chicoine, who began serving as president in 2007.

Schaefer says the board will soon announce a presidential search process and timeline.

Chicoine says it's time for himself and his wife to move to the next stage of their lives. He says the school is moving in "a good direction."
