South Dakota State Fairgrounds Cleans Up Severe Storm Damage
Fair Manager Jerome Hertel said the damage consisted of “mainly trees and a few structures.”
“With those straight-line winds blowing through here we had a few big trees that tipped over… We had one of the 4-H livestock tile barns actually fall over out here on the state fairgrounds,” explained Hertel. “Unfortunately, there was some vehicles that were parked underneath it that were trying to stay out of the hail storm. So we did have some damages out here to some vehicles.”
The Associated Press reported that “the fairgrounds is hosting an Airstream camper rally. Hertel says about 250 of the aluminum campers were parked when the storm hit. He says most weathered the storm well. Some of the rally-goers took refuge in buildings on the fairgrounds.”
Additional damage to the fairgrounds included several booths that were “wrapped around trees,” trash barrels tossed about and a lightpole that was knocked down.
Hertel said the clean-up should not delay the South Dakota State Fair which begins in late August.
