South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard says he personally thanked a South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper who was shot during a standoff near Kimball.

Daugaard spoke with Sgt. John Koenig Thursday and thanked him for his bravery. He says Koenig replied that he understood the risks of his job.

Koenig was in stable condition after the incident.

The man accused of shooting him surrendered after a standoff that lasted about 24 hours. Authorities say it began Wednesday afternoon when he and a second man inside the house called the Brule County Sheriff's Office and threatened law enforcement.

Formal charges are pending against both men. The state Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into the case.
