RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — The military says more than half of South Dakota National Guard employees will be affected by furloughs beginning next month.

The Guard says 540 full-time employees out of 958 in the South Dakota National Guard are affected by the budget cuts, known as sequestration.

The Rapid City Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1607hRn ) the furlough will require certain National Guard employees to take 11 unpaid days off from Aug. 2 to Sept. 30.

Guard spokesman Terry Ommen says the Guard is able to call employees back to work in case of an emergency.
