An Arlington man accidentally shot himself at a gun show in South Dakota over the weekend.

The Arlington resident mistakenly thought his Ruger 9mm was unloaded when he attempted to dry-fire the gun during the gun show, he quickly found out that was not the case as a bullet struck the ring finger on his left hand.

The man was taken from the Curt Carter Memorial Gun Show in Watertown to a local hospital where his non life-threatening injury was treated according to Watertown Police Department Sgt. Troy VanDusen.

The accident is another great example of why a person should never assume a weapon is unloaded.

As an avid gun rights supporter and gun owner myself, you can never be to careful around firearms.

Always check the status of your firearm, so you know without a doubt whether or not it's loaded or unloaded.

Be sure you know how your firearm operates prior to attempting to handle and clean it.

You should also keep the firearm’s muzzle pointed in a safe direction, which means that the gun is pointed so that even if an accidental discharge occurred, it would not result in injury.
