Politician for Life? Not in South Dakota. Term Limits Stay in Place.
Term limits for South Dakota lawmakers that are currently in place will remain after the Senate rejected a proposed constitutional amendment that would have extended those limits.
The vote on Wednesday was 23-12 against the proposal which would have allowed lawmakers to serve up to six consecutive terms in one chamber.
Senate and House members are allowed to serve four consecutive terms in a chamber for a total of eight years. If a lawmaker wishes to continue serving legislatively after reaching the limit, he or she can run for another chamber.
Had the measure succeeded in the legislature, a statewide vote of approval would have been needed to change the state's constitution.
