PIERRE - Two inmates have been indicted on charges accusing them of assaulting a prison guard.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says 28-year-old Carlos Rapheal Green faces one count of aggravated assault against a corrections employee. Twenty-four-year-old Garrett Austin Dumarce faces a charge of aiding, abetting or advising aggravated assault against a corrections employee.

Cpl. Zane Mathis was hospitalized April 20 with a broken jaw and facial cuts after he was punched several times in the head.

Green is serving more than 40 years for Brown County convictions that include aggravated assault. He's charged as a habitual offender, which could bring a maximum life sentence.

Dumarce, who is serving 5 years for a Roberts County grand theft, faces a maximum sentence of 50 years with the habitual offender status.
