ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) — An ice rink in northeast South Dakota is competing against facilities across the country to host an NHL preseason game and up to $150,000 in arena upgrades.

The Odde Ice Center in Aberdeen is participating in the Kraft Hockeyville campaign, which supports grassroots hockey. To have a chance at winning one of the multiple prices, community members had to nominate the facility by submitting an essay and photos online.

The Aberdeen American News reports more than 65 nominations were submitted for the Odde Ice Center by the Friday deadline. The submissions will now be judged on four criteria, including community spirit and pride.

Last year's winner was Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown, Pennsylvania — better known as the setting for "Slap Shot," the classic 1977 hockey comedy.
