South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard has proclaimed September 7-13 as "Suicide Prevention Week" in the state.

In 2011, there were more than 39 thousand suicide deaths in the U.S. with 125 suicide deaths in South Dakota.

To help prevent suicides, Governor Daugaard says it is critical that everyone learn the signs and risk factors for suicide, and learn what prevention, early intervention and treatment resources are available locally.

If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).  The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can connect you to a trained crisis counselor at your nearest crisis center, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
