South Dakota Auction Selling Westerhuis Estate Items

The late Westerhuis family’s personal items are up for sale this month. Last month, a judge ruled that all of the family’s remaining property could be auctioned in order to pay off creditors.

The Westerhuis estate auction will include a variety of items, including 40-ares of land, buildings, watercraft machines, trucks, tools and building supplies.

The live auction, which is hosted by Wieman Auction, will occur September 16.

Wieman will also host an open house Wednesday (September 7) at the property located near Platte, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. The company is holding an online auction as well, for easier access to those unable to travel to the event.

The online portion has items already up for grabs, including various exercise and weightlifting equipment, furniture and electronics. It will be on the web until it closes Monday, September 12 at 10:00 AM.

The judge presiding over the case decided that earnings must first be distributed for funeral expenses. After that, any medical expenses and payments due to attorneys representing the estate are next in line. Then there are other creditors who may receive compensation, including the electrician who worked on the property and The Department of Education.

The entire Westerhuis family passed away last year, after father Scott Westerhuis shot his wife and four children, set their home on fire, and then killed himself. While working at Platte’s Mid-Central Educational Cooperative, Westerhuis allegedly took more than $1 million from the GEAR UP program, an organization who provides higher-education assistance to low-income students.
