A memo from the Associated School Boards of South Dakota recently targeted 14 lawmakers, who the association says may vote against the half penny sales tax, urging constituents to contact their representative.

Rep. Leslie Heinemann was on that list. He represents the district including Colman, Egan, Dell Rapids, Flandreau, Madison and other area schools.

He said there were additional last-minute amendments to the bill and it was important to go through them rather than voting on the unknown.

Heinemann says although the sales tax vote is an important issue, it’s taking away the focus from other important issues as well.

With the many phone calls and activity at the Capital building, Heinemann says it’s important to focus on all of the issues that are affecting the state.

The vote on the half penny sales tax for teachers is scheduled again Tuesday, but is widely believed to be stalled once more.
