Easy now. Steady. Wait for it. Wait for it!

If you are a bow hunter this time of year can get you a little antsy. We're just under one month away from the archery opener here in South Dakota. As you can tell by the picture above, I'm a big fan of bow hunting. Archery hunting is a great game of cat and mouse or hunter and deer.

Many hunters already have game cams out keeping an eye open for a nice buck. Strategies are being plotted and planned and early season hunters are already doing a day count on remaining vacation days so they can plan their hunting.

Last week we heard that you can already hang stands getting ready for the season. If you hunt Newton Hills south of Canton, SD you'll want to see this. According to SDGFP,

Free access permits will also now be required for archery hunters wishing to hunt Newton Hills State Park in Lincoln County.

  • Due to its close proximity to Sioux Falls and other populated areas, Newton Hills State Park is heavily used by archery deer hunters.
  • Any hunter possessing an archery deer license will also need to obtain a free access permit prior to hunting the park.
  • The requirement of the unlimited, free access permits will allow the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) to collect hunter and harvest data for improved deer management.
Even though the opener is coming up I'm not too concerned yet. I'm more of a wait for the bugs to die rut hunter. I'll have more on that next time.
Oh, don't get me wrong, I have the date circled on the calender!  September 26 you could be up and on looking for a deer in South Dakota.
