The South Dakota Highway Patrol says it is targeting 14 counties with sobriety checkpoints (also referred to as "mobile checkpoints" or "roadblocks") in May.

The monthly checkpoints are done as a way to discourage people from drinking and driving. It also serves as a reminder for seatbelts, proof of insurance, drivers license, and registration.

The counties where the South Dakota Highway Patrol will "set up shop" are:

  • Bennett
  • Brown
  • Charles Mix
  • Codington
  • Edmunds
  • Hughes
  • Jerald
  • Minnehaha
  • Moody
  • Pennington
  • Roberts
  • Spink
  • Tripp
  • Yankton

South Dakota drivers can receive text messages sent to their cellphones informing them when police will conduct checkpoints to arrest drunken drivers. The texts, sent by the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, will warn motorists when and in which counties checkpoints are planned, but do not give specific locations for the checkpoints.
