The first official day of winter showed up in the Sioux Empire on Thursday, (December 21) and it sure felt and looked like it too.

The National Weather Service says the Sioux Falls area received nearly four inches of snow over the past 24 hours which has prompted the city to issue a snow alert.

KDLT News is reporting, that as of 8 PM Thursday night, snowplows hit the streets of Sioux Falls and began clearing the emergency snow routes. Plows will stay at it, until emergency routes are cleared. Most neighborhoods in Sioux Falls located outside of the downtown area will be plowed starting Friday morning, (December 22) after the main roads are cleared.

According to KDLT News, work got underway in Zone 2 starting Friday morning at 8. Plowing on north and south streets began at that time. If your vehicle is parked on a north and south street in Zone 2 you run the risk of being ticketed or towed until streets have been plowed, or until 5 PM Friday, whichever happens first.

Plows will also start working on clearing east and west streets in Zone 2 on Friday, however, parking restrictions will not take effect until 8 PM Friday night. Restrictions on those streets will be lifted starting at 8 AM on Saturday, (December 23) or whenever streets have been cleared, whichever comes first.

KDLT News reports, remaining snow removal operations in Zone 1 start at midnight on Saturday. If your car is in Zone 1 at that time, it's a prime target for ticketing and towing from 1 AM to 6 AM that morning.

Confused yet? I thought you might be. Here's a guide to help you better understand what snow removal zone you live in.

Welcome to winter my friend!
