Sioux Falls Storm Grinds On [PHOTOS]

This morning when I came to work I thought it would be nice to take a drive through some of the neighborhoods and get some pictures.  So I dropped off of 57th street in South East Sioux Falls and headed south on Lewis.

Now, those of you familiar with Sioux Falls know that this 'isn't an older part of town.  It's pretty new.  At any rate, I took this picture.  Then I looked up.  I said to myself, I think it's time to get out of here now.  It doesn't appear to be safe.  So, I thought I'd drive up to the next corner and just get out.  Nope.  Blocked off.  How about to the left?  Nope, can't go that way either.

There are many parts of town, where you simply can't get around.  There are downed trees everywhere. The ice storm that blew through yesterday has left and impressive signature on the city.  This morning I get to work to hear of no less that 3 active structure fires in Sioux Falls.  Downed power lines are no doubt the culprit in most of the cases.  It's been quite a 24 hour period.

If our place is like yours, most of the time at work today has been spent on discussing damage that we've either seen or witnessed first hand.  Dave Roberts programs KSOO-AM and he said, 'I didn't sleep at all last night.  The limbs just kept crashing down.'

As you well know by now, the city of Sioux Falls has opened up the leaf droppoff sites in Sioux Falls, (by the city shop on North Cliff Avenue and by the Fairgrounds) where residents can haul in downed limbs. I can tell you right now, that those sites are going to be filled with impressive piles here in the next week or so as Sioux Falls continues to clean up.

The generator pictured above is something that our engineers Mike and John put in several years ago.  We hadn't had to use it for years.  It sure is coming handy though today and helping us stay on the air.  Last night, we did lose power to the transmitter site, but that was for a short time only.  Other than broadcasting at slightly lower power, we have been able to stay up and on the entire time.

Listeners are also finding new ways of keeping in touch.  Listening on line through their computer or with the Radio Pup ap on their mobile devices.  Between those outlets plus our Facebook and Twitter accounts (we'd love you to 'like and follow') we have been jumping busy the past few days.

Yesterday, simply filling a car with gas was an adventure.  The lid frozen shut, heck getting into a car was a circus, climbing across the console to get in from the other side. It has been something.  And It's not over.  More snow is forecast for today and tonight and the winds are predicted to come up even more.

Hunker down folks.  Warmer weather is expected for Friday and through the weekend.  Oh, and rumor has it, Spring is coming too.  Or it's supposed to be here already.
