Nearly a dozen nonprofits will be the beneficiaries of an afternoon of celebration and service on Monday January 16 - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Each third Monday in January, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a day of service - "a day on, not a day off.”

During his lifetime, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. recognized the power of service, famously saying,

“Everybody can be great because anybody can serve.”

Locally, a variety of hands-on service projects will be available that day at Sunnycrest Retirement Village (3900 S. Terry Ave) between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM.

This event is open to the public and no reservations are required; simply show up and lend a hand. A special invitation is extended to seniors and retired persons, however.

This year's event is being sponsored by Senior Companions of South Dakota and Helpline RSVP, two programs that focus specifically on service by older Americans.
