A boyfriend and girlfriend in Sioux Falls got into an argument that turned violent early Thursday morning.

Sioux Falls Police Information Officer Sam Clemens says the boyfriend was holding a butcher knife.

"The girlfriend spent a night at a friend's house. When she returned to their apartment, he was upset that she was gone. They started arguing. At one point he went to the kitchen, grabbed a butcher knife and threatened her with it. She thought he was going to stab her, she grabbed hold of it. When the victim did that the boyfriend pulled the knife away cutting her hand."

Clemens says that's when the girlfriend ran from the apartment.

"The victim tried to grab her purse where the phone was. He knocked the purse away. She left the apartment, went to a neighbor and asked them to call police for her."

Youssouf Cisse, 22, of Sioux Falls was arrested and charged with aggravated assault domestic and interruption of emergency communications.
