The Cathedral Historic District is inviting you to submit poetry in the 2016 Cathedral Historic District Sidewalk Poetry Contest.

Gail Cain, Sidewalk Poetry Contest committee chair has been a Cathedral Historic District resident for more than 15 years.

This is a permanent and beautiful way to feature local poets and draw people up the hill from the Downtown Sculpture Walk to visit the Cathedral Historic District.

The program was created to encourage walking visitors to Sioux Falls' oldest historic neighborhood and foster an appreciation for the art of poetry as well as historic homes and their caretakers, the 2016 Sidewalk Poetry Contest is funded by a Neighborhood Project Grant from the City of Sioux Falls. It is produced in collaboration with Siouxland Libraries and Live Well Sioux Falls, and Cathedral Historic District neighbors.

"Everyone deserves beauty," said Wayne Wagner, Housing Development Director for Affordable Housing Solutions. Since the contest began in 2014, Wagner has installed poems in the sidewalk of new affordable housing within the neighborhood.

This year, Wagner will imprint a 2016 winning poem, as will Cathedral Historic District neighbors, Dan and Tamara Blodgett:

We've bought into a piece of history. Immortalizing words that honor our home is the least we can do to preserve its heritage. Historic homes deserve to be remembered as a piece of the past. Poetry is a great compliment toward that end.

The Sidewalk Poetry Contest is open to all Sioux Falls' residents. They are asked to submit original poems by midnight June 30, 2016. The winning poems, one adult and one youth, will be published in Cathedral Historic Neighborhood sidewalks this fall.
