SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The mayor of Sioux Falls says North Dakota's booming oil patch has both opportunities and lessons for South Dakota's largest city.

Mike Huether traveled to the oil patch hub of Williston this week to get a firsthand look at the boomtown. Williston's population has doubled since 2010, and with annexation the city's physical size has tripled.

Huether says the use of local sales tax revenue to fund costs in Williston and surrounding Williams County associated with the rapid growth could be a lesson for Sioux Falls and surrounding Minnehaha County. The Argus Leader newspaper reports (http://argusne.ws/1u3l4GH ) that South Dakota currently has no provision for counties to levy sales taxes.

Huether also says more South Dakota companies can capitalize on the North Dakota boom by expanding there.
