Police say a Sioux Falls man is facing a list of charges after an incident that began with a neighbor reporting a barking dog late Monday night.

Captain Greg VandeKamp says officers were called shortly before midnight to Redbird Place, but the first officer found a man with a Jack Russell Terrier at West Third Street and North Valley View Road.

"The officer did observe this individual kick [the] dog a couple times. The individual then got into his SUV, at which time the officer made contact with him. As he was waling up to the car there was another incident where this guy slammed the dog into the passenger door of the vehicle."

VandeKamp says the officer noticed the man had been drinking, and after a brief physical altercation the man was arrested. He says 47-year-old Howard Wright of Sioux Falls was arrested for DWI-second offense, inhuman treatment of an animal, driving with a suspended license, resisting arrest, obstructing an officer and having an open container.

The dog was placed in protective custody.
