Sioux Falls Lincoln Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary
In case you missed the news, Sioux Falls Lincoln High School turned 50 years old on Wednesday, April 20, 2016.
In honor of the event, the school unveiled a sculpture of Honest Abe himself to all Patriot alumni and booster club members on Wednesday.
According to Lincoln High School Principal Valerie Fox, the sculpture helps emphasize what the school is known for; fine arts.
Lincoln has always had a long history of affording students the opportunity to work in areas like; aviation mechanics, radio, TV and technical drafting. Heck, I even attended Lincoln during my senior year to work on "OWL TV", which at the time was part of Adrian Dalen's radio and television class. That goes back so far, Lincoln might have even still been president. Hello!
Fox said they wanted to honor the man behind the schools name. "Lincoln as a president was really known for bringing people together,” says Fox. “He was a unifier that was part of what his mission, and that's what we try to do at this school is unify kids, unify people and unify thoughts.”
The sculpture depicts Lincoln as a leader and a family man. That is why he was sculpted reading to his son according to the Spearfish, SD artist that created the sculpt.
There's a chance that you may have already seen this sculpture before. The new Lincoln sculpt had been featured in the downtown Sioux Falls SculptureWalk.
