Mass fatality events have become a reality in every corner of the world and
South Dakota is not immune to these types of events.

Mutual aid, collaboration and resource management are the best tools when it comes to disaster responses. In the vent of a mass fatality incident, they will be critical.

That's why for the past two years Minnehaha County and Sioux Falls have been working on a plan that can be copied across the state. Our news-gathering partner KDLT-TV interviewed MInnehaha County Coroner Dr. Kenneth Snell during a media briefing on Tuesday.

"If we have more than ten individuals that die in a single event, we potentially consider that a mass disaster event and activate the stuff we have today."

Dr. Snell tells KDLT TV he has worked the scene of a plane crash where 21 people died.

"Our mass fatalities plan is a lot like the one on the national level. Our plane crash over there, what we worry about is jet fuel. It could cause harm to us so we would want to clean those individuals."

Several different local, state and federal agencies will go through the tour this week.
