SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The Sioux Falls City Council is considering a ban on ticket scalping.

The city's Sports Authority says it's necessary if the city hopes to host NCAA tournaments at the new Sanford Pentagon, the new Denny Sanford Premier Center or the University of Sioux Falls track and field facility.

The council will vote on the proposed ordinance Aug. 20. It would outlaw reselling event tickets above face value, unless it's done either online or in a private residence. It also would make it illegal to sell tickets below face value at the event venue or within a half-mile of the event.

The ordinance would apply to sporting events as well as theatrical and musical events. Violators would face fines of up to $500 and up to 30 days in jail.
