Sioux Falls Construction Projects for Summer 2017 Announced

Several traffic arteries in the city of Sioux Falls are expanding to bring a better flow of traffic, but first it’s going to hurt.  Construction season is about to begin for the 2017 season.

South Louise Avenue will undergo changes from West 41st Street to 49th Street, which will encompass 49th and Louise. Lanes will expand from five to six lanes including a center turn lanes.  Underneath the surface, storm drainage and other necessities will be put in place while above upgraded streetlights with LED lighting will be added.

City Enginner Chad Huwe knows the work will be an inconvenience in the short term, but a benefit for years to come:

In 2017, Sioux Falls residents and visitors will see orange barrels on several major streets in the city, and we will work hard to expedite the projects as much as we can to keep Sioux Falls moving.

More projects will be launching soon:

  • 69th Street and Western Avenue will be redone, adding wider land and turning lanes.
  • 26th Street and Minnesota improvements are underway, upgrading underground utilities within the intersection, and repairs on Minnesota Avenue from 18th to 33rd Street.
  • Arrowhead Parkway will be reconstructed between Sycamore and Highline Avenue. Arrowhead Parkway will be widened to six lanes and include a median with left turn lanes at select intersections throughout the corridor.
  • The South Dakota Department of Transportation will expand Veterans Parkway, connecting to Rice Street.
  • Resurfacing projects include East 49th Street from Southeastern Avenue as well as Cliff and South Bahnson  from Tenth  to 26th Street.
  • Downtown, the Main Avenue Road Diet soften the roadway with bumpouts and landscaping on the east side of Main from Sixth to Eighth Street and from 11th to 12th Street.

If your street is not on the construction list and potholes are an issue, you can call the Pothole Hotline at 367-8002 or go to

In the past seven construction seasons, the City of Sioux Falls has improved a total of 433 miles of roadways. Another 40 to 50 miles will be improved in 2017.
