WINNIPEG, MB - The Sioux Falls Canaries (6-6) snapped their 6-game losing streak, defeating the Winnipeg Goldeyes (7-6) by the final score of 8-6 in 13 innings on Tuesday night at Shaw Park.

The Birds’ offense broke out of their early season slump, exploding for eight runs on 11 hits in their sixth win of the season. Third baseman Blake Schmit put the Canaries on the board in the top of the third inning, sending a two-run triple to the wall in center field, driving in Frank Martinez and Cameron Monger to give the Sioux Falls a 2-0 lead.

The Canaries added another run in the top of the 4th inning to make it 3-0 before Goldeyes outfielder David Rohm drove in the first Winnipeg run of the night on a one-out RBI single to right.

Monger put the Birds’ back up by three in the top of the 5th inning when he send a lead-off homerun deep over the wall in left, giving Sioux Falls a 4-1 lead. It was the second blast of the season for Monger, who finished the night 1-for-6 with an RBI, a walk and a run scored.

Starting pitcher Shawn Blackwell picked up a no-decision after leaving the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs. Blackwell (1-1, 5.68 ERA) allowed one run over his first four innings, but ran out of gas in the fifth. The right-hander recorded the first two outs of the inning before allowing Maikol Gonzalez to reach base with a two-out single. It was the first of five consecutive batters to reach, forcing Blackwell out of the game.

The Goldeyes sent 10 men to the plate in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on five hits to take their first lead of the night.

The Goldeyes would hold on to their one-run lead until the top of the ninth inning, when Schmit singled to centerfield, and stole second base before coming home to score the game tying run on a Taylor Zeutenhorst RBI sac-fly to deep center field.

The game would stay tied at 5-5 until the top of the 13th inning, when Aaron Owen reached base on a lead-off single to center. The speedy outfielder would steal second base to get into scoring position, before scoring three batters later on a Zeutenhorst RBI single.

The Birds would add two more runs in the top of the inning to give themselves an 8-5 lead. Canaries closer Chase Johnson allowed a run to score in the bottom of the 13th, but picked up his third save of the season after striking out Jacob Rogers for the final out of the night.

LHP Kris Regas (2-0, 3.00 ERA) picked up the win for Canaries after recording a 1-2-3 bottom of 12 inning. The Canaries bullpen combined for seven shutout innings before Johnson allowed his lone run in the bottom of the 13th.

Schmit finished the night going 3-for-7 with two RBI and a run scored. The Canaries third baseman picked up his seventh multi-hit game of the year, and is now hitting .340 overall on the season. Zeutenhorst was the only other Canaries batter with a multi-hit night, going 2-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored.

The Canaries will send RHP Madison Boer (0-1, 12.46 ERA) to the mound on Wednesday night at 7:05 PM to battle Goldeyes RHP Duke Von Schamann (0-1, 9.00 ERA). Fans can listen to the action live on Sioux Falls Sports Radio AM-1230, FM-98.1 KWSN.
