SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls says followers should not "disown God's law" following the Supreme Court's decision giving same-sex couples the right to marry.

Bishop Paul Swain directly addressed the Supreme Court's Friday decision at a Monday prayer service at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Sioux Falls. He said that "we owe respect" to the country's laws, but "obedience" to God's law.

Swain also said that "we do not judge anyone," and that "judgment is to be left to God." The Argus Leader reports the Sioux Falls service was organized before the ruling's release as part of a national event that promotes religious protections.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has criticized the Supreme Court's ruling.
