The Better Business Bureau has put out a warning of a scam demanding payment for a missed jury duty fine.

"Sometimes the calls are reported to be from the U.S. Marshal," The BBB's Jesse Schmidt tells us. "They are also from purported calls from court officials. They say you missed your summons for jury duty and now you have to pay a fine. it's typical of a scam: they try to get you off guard. While on the phone, these scammers will ask for the social security of the people they call. That's a major mistake! If someone asks for the social security number, this is huge red flag. You are not notified that you have jury duty by a phone call or a text message."

Schmidt says the scammers are in search of personal information.

"There is nothing these people won't do to separate you from your money. If someone is asking for your social security or credit card number over the telephone number, that's a clue this is not a legitimate call."

Schmidt offers this advice if you get one of these calls.

"If you ever question you are called for jury duty, just call up your local county or federal courthouse. That's all you need to do."

Anyone who gets one of these calls should also contact their local police department.
