Sioux Falls Police are investigating a case of elder abuse in the city.

"We had a home health nurse that showed up in a home. He found an elderly gentleman who is 99-years-old. He was covered with feces," Police Information Officer Sam Clemens explained.

"As the nurse was cleaning him up, he noticed some bruising to his one of his legs. The police were then called. What we found was the victim's son, who is 66-years-old, has been caring for him when the nurse was not around. The victim told police that the son had kicked him several times in the leg which caused the bruising."

Clemens says elder abuse does exist in Sioux Falls.

"There is some that takes place. But, it's not something we see or deal with everyday. As the population ages, we probably may see more of that in the future. It's just one of those things that officers know is out there. Thankfully, we don't have a lot of these cases. But, it does take place."

Clemens says John Melvin Lewis of Sioux Falls has been charged with abuse or neglect of an elder.
