Fire fighters were back on alert Monday morning as a blaze damaged a home in eastern Sioux Falls. A passerby was the first to alert authorities.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue was called to 1317 S. Gary Drive around 8:30 AM. The first units on scene discovered smoke and flames coming from the second-floor window.

It took an estimated 10 minutes to settle down the flames. No one was injured as everyone was able to escape. Only one person was home when the fire began.

The fire mainly damaged to the second floor of the home. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded with two support vehicles, five fire trucks, and 20 firefighters. This incident was on the heels of a major apartment building fire near the Empire Mall almost 12 hours earlier.

Cause of the fire was determined to be a lit candle in one of the bedrooms. It was also discovered that the house did not have working smoke alarms. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue encourages residents to be sure to have working smoke alarms in their homes.
