RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Children who attend parades in Rapid City might soon be able to stuff their pockets with candy — legally.

A city committee voted Wednesday to change an ordinance that has made it illegal for parade participants to shower the streets with candy. The Rapid City Journal reports that the committee made the move even though the ordinance apparently was never enforced.

The origins of the ordinance and even the possible punishment for violating it aren't clear. Councilman Chad Lewis says it might have had a legitimate purpose at one time, but now it seems "silly."

The City Council is expected to approve the revised ordinance at its Monday meeting.

Lewis quipped, "Hopefully, this will remove an entire generation from going down the path of a life of crime."
