YANKTON, S.D. (AP) - Yankton County is spending up to $50,000 to place rock riprap near a bridge over the James River to prevent further shoreline erosion.

The Daily Press & Dakotan newspaper reports that the erosion problems at the bridge on Old Highway 50 date back 20 years but were exacerbated by flooding last year.

Replacing the 60-year-old bridge would cost an estimated $4.8 million.

The riprap work is to be done next week.
