A Denver filmmaker who produces training and documentary films for the military is making a documentary about rodeo legend Casey Tibbs.

Justin Koehler grew up in the South Dakota town of Midland, not far from Tibbs' hometown of Fort Pierre. The Capital Journal reports he finished up just about all of the interviews he needs during a trip to Pierre and Fort Pierre earlier in March.

He hopes to release the film later this year. Check out Casey Tibbs South Dakota Rodeo Center.

Between 1949 and 1955, Tibbs won six PRCA saddle bronc riding championships, a record still unchallenged, plus two all-around cowboy championships and one bareback riding championship.

Tibbs also wrote a syndicated newspaper column and starred in several movies. He was a founder of the Rodeo Cowboys Association.

Tibbs died in January 1990 of bone cancer while watching The Super Bowl at his home. He's buried near Fort Pierre.
