The first influenza cases of the season have been detected in South Dakota, two of them in Minnehaha County.

The State Health Department says a case of influenza B was reported in a Minnehaha County resident in the 70 to 79 age group.

Influenza A was reported in a child under 10 in Davison County and in a Minnehaha County adult in the 30 to 39 age group.

None of the three needed to be hospitalized, but the diagnoses bring a reminder about vaccinations.

State Epidemiologist Dr. Lon Kightlinger says yearly vaccination is the single best way to prevent the flu. He says vaccines are readily available in the state and this is a good time to get your flu shot, especially if you are in a high-risk group.
