SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota State and University of South Dakota fans donated more than 17 tons of food that will be distributed through food banks and pantries.

In the week leading up to Saturday's matchup between the two football teams, fans filled barrels of donated food at nine Hy-Vee grocery stores in Sioux Falls, Brookings and Vermillion.

The South Dakota Corn Utilization Council says Jackrabbit fans donated 18,747 pounds and Coyote supporters gave 16,613 pounds. The food will provide more than 29,000 meals.

SDSU won the game 27-12.
