SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Dakotas-based Sanford Health has received an award at a conference in Vatican City.

The Argus Leader reports that the health system received the Pontifical Key Innovation Award, which recognizes medical innovation.

Sanford CEO Kelby Krabbenhoft, several Sanford doctors and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford are taking part in the Cellular Horizons conference at the Vatican this week.

The conference addresses the progress of regenerative medicine and its cultural impact. It was created by the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Culture and the New York-based Stem for Life Foundation.

Sanford Health is one of the largest health systems in the nation, with 43 hospitals and nearly 250 clinics in nine states and three countries.
