News of Merle Haggard's death stunned the country music community on Wednesday (April 6), and since the news broke, numerous stars have been paying tribute in various ways to "the Hag." During his show on Wednesday evening in Oslo, Norway, Sam Outlaw treated the crowd to a cover of a Haggard classic.

Outlaw opened his sold-out concert by performing a cover of "Silver Wings" for the few hundred Norwegian fans in attendance. On a darkened stage, Outlaw began the song solo, accompanying himself with only an acoustic guitar; during the second verse, Molly Jenson -- who is currently on tour with Outlaw -- added in beautiful harmonies. Outlaw, who has resided in California since he was 10 years old, released his debut album, Angeleno, last June, and recently debuted a music video for the project's title track. The singer-songwriter wrote all of Angeleno‘s songs, and the album as a whole is filled with Southern California country — a different sound than Nashville country, certainly.

“Making country music in Los Angeles — it’s not like Nashville, where there’s this built-in love for roots music, but there used to be,” Outlaw explains. “The history of country music in Southern California is very special, and it’s incredible, so as much as God knows I want people to know about me … in some way, it’s almost more important to me that people get turned on to the greater history of country music in L.A. and Southern California.”

Outlaw wrapped up a U.S. tour at the end of March and will be playing throughout Europe until mid-April.
