Parents tell their children that when they grow up, they should do things in this order: graduate high school, go to college, graduate from college, find a good job, start the dating process and THEN get married, putting the young man or woman's age at about the middle to the upper 20's.

A recently released survey by Nicholas Wolfinger, a sociology professor at the University of Utah, has helped to show that there seems to be a "perfect age" to get married and it just might prove that parents do know what they are talking about.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG), compiled data from the years of 2006-2010 from about 22,000 people between the ages of 15 and 44 years of age, asking them what they thought about marriage, divorce, sex and pregnancy. From the data collected, all signs pointed to a perfect age for someone to get married.

Trying to determine if that data and findings were still correct, Wolfinger continued the study and gathered data from the years of 2011-2013. His findings still matched those from the previous study done by the NSFG, and continues to show that the optimal age range for someone to get married, and avoid going through a divorce, is between the ages of 28 and 32 years of age.

Wolfinger's findings prove that the odds of divorce go down for those in their late 20's and early 30's, but change as a person gets older. He writes,

The chances of divorce go up again as you move into your late thirties and early forties. After age 32, divorce risk climbs about 5 percent each year.

Of course there are those that don't believe in Wolfinger's findings because he only looked at couples divorcing within five years after their marriage. Many psychologists and sociologists want to believe that ideally, couples should try to make their marriage last longer than half a decade as they continue to get to know themselves and each other.

In all reality, however, Wolfinger's research does make sense. By the time someone is between the ages of 28 and 32, they should have an idea of who they are as a person, what they want out of life and what characteristics in a life partner would make them happy.
